The beautiful sound of the guitar is heard around the earth, played by amateur and professional alike. One of those responsible for its increased respect is the late Spanish concert guitarist Andros Segovia, who took the guitar out of obscurity and turned it into a classical concert instrument.

Why is the guitar so popular? Without doubt it’s because its sound, whether in the flamenco, classical, modern style or electric its magic creates differing moods. But another reason is that it is so easy to carry.
Whatever may be the reasons for its popularity, the way a guitar is constructed makes a big difference in the sound. The best guitars are usually created with great love and care by a person  known as a luthier. Let us visit a luthiers workshop in Boston, U.S.A., and watch the making of a guitar.

As we are welcomed into his workshop, our attention is drawn to the enormous quantity of wood. But this is not just any sort of wood. Each piece has been carefully selected and stored for future guitars. Spruce and cedar for the top; rosewood, mahogany, and maple for the back and sides; and mahogany and Spanish cedar for the neck. For flamenco guitars Spanish cypress and sycamore are usually used for back and sides. Picking up a piece, we notice that it has a date marked on it. Our luthier friend explains: I prefer not to use any wood until it has dried naturally for about five years. Why is that?  Because years of experience have proved that the age, the quality of the wood, and the luthiers skill determine the final characteristics of the guitar.

Lets watch over our luthiers shoulder as he builds a classical guitar. Guitars generally fall into two categories: Classical, or Spanish, and steel string. What are the differences? He answers: The differences between the two are many, but the choice of string material is the easiest way to distinguish each type. As its name implies, the steel-string guitar has metal strings. It is made in many sizes and shapes. On the other hand, on the classical guitar nylon or animal intestines, catgut, is used for string material on three strings and metal-spun silk on the other three.
Our luthier prefers to have each customer visit his shop so he can listen to him play. In this way he can tailor a guitar to its client. How? Our builder explains: I watch how strongly they attack the strings, the type of sound they produce. I also want to know how they will use the guitar. Then I can adjust the building procedure slightly to match them personally. Do they play softly? Then I make certain parts of the guitar thinner or smaller so that it produces sound more easily. Are they aggressive? Then the guitar must be made slightly heavier.

The Loving Construction.
The body top, or sound table: The actual construction begins by selecting the woods to be used. Our luthier picks carefully through a stack of spruce and occasionally holds a piece close to his ear and taps it with his finger. He is listening for many things; is the sound clear, loud, musical, and of long duration, or does it respond with a dull thud? Almost all body tops and backs are made from two matching pieces of wood. They are sawed from one board and then opened up like a book. In this way both halves look alike and have the same musical potential.

The rosette: The top is thinned to approximately 1/8 inch, [3mm] and the beautiful sound-hole reinforcement, or rosette, is carefully fitted into a channel cut for it. The rosette is made from many pieces of wood of different colors and is one place where the luthier can express his artistic ability. It often requires one full days work to make and inlay a rosette. When the glue of the rosette has dried thoroughly, the top is thinned further, usually to about 1/10 inch. [2.5mm] The top is now cut to the outline of the guitar, and all the reinforcing braces are glued to the underside of the top. These braces are important to the sound production and the physical strength of the guitar. Most luthiers agree that the top produces most of the sound and is the single most important part of the guitar.
Rosewood from Brazil is usually the first choice of the luthier for the back and sides because of its beautiful grain patterns, variety of colors, and sound-producing character.

When you are naturally left handed, your whole life you feel like you have to learn things backwards.  When starting to play the guitar, the suggestion for you as a lefty will be to learn left handed guitar, but it might not be the best choice.

You will feel awkward regardless what hand you use.  When starting out, playing your guitar is going to be uncomfortable and awkward.  Your hands and fingers haven’t been challenged and stretched in such a way before.  Since this is the case, you have the option of choosing which hand you would like to use with the guitar.  Find out why you might want to use a right handed guitar.

All guitar material will always be backwards.  If you choose to play left handed all material and chord charts will be backwards.  Tablature which many guitar songs can be easily played with always have to be played backwards.  All scales will be taught backwards.  This just makes it rather difficult in the long run.

Left handed guitars have less models and are more expensive.  You will always be limited in your choices.  Even when you find the guitar you want, it’s going to be considerably more compared to the right handed model.  It’s also annoying to not be able to play a friend’s new guitar because it’s the wrong hand.

The most used hand on a right handed guitar is the left hand.  On the right hand guitar technique the left hand is on the fretboard while the right hand picks or strums.  Picking and strumming is much easier than using the fretboard.  It makes more logical sense to use your strong hand, your left, to do the hardest job while using your less dominant hand, your right, to do the easier task. 

Make whatever decision you want.  The lefty has many advantages to just used a right handed guitar.

Though many would like to learn to become guitarists, it is not an easy instrument for many people.  Simply looking at the guitar sheet music can give you an idea of the complexity involved.  There are many instruments that require the musician to read a single note at a time, guitarists sometimes have to read six at once.

For obvious reasons, it would be very difficult to dive in and begin learning to read six notes at once.  Such a move would only cause frustration.  Rather, it’s important to take your time and then go forward bit by bit, only taking 1-2 notes at any given time.  An easy method to learn to play two notes at once is to play the octaves.  What follows here are some steps that you should follow to read octaves on guitar sheet music.

When you begin, try looking over the entire song and then find a pair of notes stacked on top of one another in the sheet music.  This phenomenon is called an octave.  That will be a starting point from where you can use your pointer finger on the opposite hand that you write with, and put it onto the lower note you find on that octave.  Then put your ring finger onto the higher note in the octave.

Once you have gone that far, you will want to strum the notes using your fingers on your stronger hand.  Do not let the strings all resound when you strum your octaves.  What you want to do instead is to keep your middle finger on your weaker hand pressing down on the strings you don’t want to sound.

What you will do after that is to play two octaves back to back that are on the same set of strings, this helps you to read and play better using guitar sheet music.  Keep your non-dominant hand and fingers in place as you continue to slide between octaves.  This will take you some time to practice, and will result in being able to read the octaves.

Take everything you do with the guitar in steps.  You want to start out with choosing the octaves from your guitar sheet music.  After that you will learn to put your fingers on the first octave.  Next you will play two octaves using the same set of strings, back to back.  Finally you will play two more octaves one right after the other, using a different set of strings for each.  Keep your non-dominant hand’s fingers extremely close to the strings, as you move to an octave on another set of strings.  This takes practice, but will teach you to become really adept at guitar.

Guitar needs protection and maintenance. A good maintenance habit from a guitar owner will prolong their instrument’s life. Often we heard there are two type of guideline about guitar restring. One recommended we cut and take out all strings and replace them at once. While the other seems to suggest that we should only change one string each time to avoid impact on the tension and guitar neck. Both guidelines seem to be contradicting. As a guitar beginner, this is quite confusing and we are not capable enough to tell which statement is true and workable.

This had been debated by guitarists in years. Both statement has it’s own supporter from guitar lovers. However there is no documented negative effect of removing all strings. Replace one string each time seems time consuming and need extra efforts. If you practice this method, your guitar restring process will take more than a day. I personally find this is inconvenience and not practical.

What I prefer to do is remove all strings from my guitar at once. This way I could easily do my cleaning job. I will clean my guitar with a micro fiber cloth and wipe down the fingerboard. After a complete clean up, I will then put on my new strings with a little help from a peg winder. Once all strings are nicely put up, I will start to tune my guitar. I prefer an electronic tuner as it is so easy to use and very accurate.

Whether to remove all guitar strings at once or change it one by one is up to your personal preference. No expert is able to confirm which method is more practical. While the debate is still going on, just simply follow the best practice you are comfortable with and enjoy your guitar playing.
