One of the problems I had when I started learning acoustic guitar was that I did not know how to strum the guitar correctly. It was very difficult for me although many others said it was easy. I tried that for many weeks until I know how to do it. I am going to give you the technique here on this article.

Here is what you are going to do in order to strum the guitar. Firstly get your song book first. Unless you can remember your song by heart, you are going to need one. Then, follow the steps for each individual practice including:

Down Stroke

  1. Sit on the chair with the guitar on your lap. Place the lower curve of the guitar on your right knee, if you are right handed.
  2. Relax both hands.
  3. Place the right hand over the guitar body. Use your thumb or pick touch the first string ( lower E string).
  4. Do the same with every string. Now you are going to count the rhythm. Use your foot to tab on the floor. Count 1-2-3-4
  5. Hold the C Am F and G7 with your left hand. Use the down stroke each time your foot tab the floor. Make sure that you do it in pace. Do not slow down if you can not hold your chord well. Still make stroke although your left hand does not function well. You can correct it later. One think to remember is that you will need to keep the pace consistent.
  6. When you are good at it. Start to apply this to your favorite song by changing the chords to the ones that match the song.
  7. I know that this style of easy strumming may be boring and not so elegance. However, this basic style will teach you to go match your rhythm with the song. After that, you will be able to adapt your strumming style to be more vibrant.

Tried this until you can change your chord without looking at your left hand and your pace does not change while playing. Then we can move to more advanced strumming later.
